The Hypogeum of Santa Maria in Stelle (much known as "Pantheon") is an archeological site, and a quite unique place of Christian cult. The site is situated in the heart of Valpantena, in the homonymous small village of S. Maria in Stelle, which name comes from a fresco painted in one of the hypogeal vaults.
The word Hypogeum comes from Greek language and literally means "underground". The site appears, in fact, as a subterranean ramified space, right underneath S. Maria Assunta church.Initially built as a Roman aqueduct, it developed in many different ways: from nymphaeum for the worshipping of waters, to baptismal site, and medioeval pilgrims destination.
